Reverend Dr. Susan Cartmell

This summer, the Rev. Dr. Susan Cartmell accepted the call to serve as pastor of Pilgrim Congregational Church. She was inspired by the church’s vision to reach out to the community through programs, worship and service. Dr. Cartmell brings enthusiasm for preaching, leading faith discussions, and exploring God’s call in our lives. She believes that God is always calling us to new possibilities to serve others and grow in faith. God’s call to transform the Church is especially powerful in times of societal change and transformation, like the one we are in today.

The daughter of a minister, Dr. Cartmell grew up in parsonages before being ordained in the Presbyterian Church USA.  She received her Doctor of Ministry from Andover Newton theological School, her Master of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School, and her Bachelors from Mount Holyoke College. The Rev. Dr. Susan Cartmell has served in the United Church of Christ since 1981. Most recently she served as Senior Minister at the Congregational Church of Needham for eighteen years and before that as sole pastor at Second Church in Winchester for over a decade.  Dr. Cartmell feels at home in many faith communities and has seen God’s hand in her life. She really enjoys talking to people about their spiritual path and how God has led them.

Dr. Cartmell has developed a new system for preaching with themes and recently wrote a book about it entitled UnCommon Preaching: An Alternative to the Lectionary. You can learn more about the book at UnCommonPreacher.com or follow her on Facebook.

Dr. Cartmell lives in Harwich with her wife, Rev. Peggy O’Connor, an intentional interim minister in the United Church of Christ. Peggy is currently serving as Senior Minister of the Pilgrim Church in Duxbury MA.
